schlo: confession

A static HTML5 visual novel released on 08.31.2025. This project uses some restrictive design elements (like "tape pieces" holding up the scene images) and small, moving textboxes to complement a restrictive storyline.

Description of the game from itch.io: Multi-chapter kinetic visual novel with dark themes.

Following the events of schlo friends, Drey Gan and Rain Clerence go to live with the rest of the Clerence family. Drey spends time dwelling on traumatic familial experiences from his past, while his relationships with his new genetically engineered family complicate further.

This project mentions events from schlo episodes 1-3, schlo complications and schlo friends. While the projects are released independently, this one contains information contingent on previous projects, especially schlo episode 1 and schlo complications.

Commentary

8 months after releasing it, I often find myself forgetting about making this one. I'm not sure why that is. Reading the itch.io devlog, it looks like I had written the script for this one about four months before its release. I think this is a monumental piece for the schlo project for a number of reasons. This project has no portraits, only scene images. I think this makes the story more dynamic. It was coded from scratch, so the gui was much more customizable. I utilized the moving textboxes, after spending some time admiring ancient Chinese art. I like how they included words/poems to go along with the images. Having mini-textboxes almost gives that effect, or it was my aspiration to make it seem that way. Thinking about the textbox placement while creating the images required extra thought for the composition. Additionally, I had a lot of fun using different effects on the images. I think this one is interesting for its art and execution. Some crucial plot points are featured in this one, as well. Oh, and also, the game dimensions in this one are so small, haha. It's cute.

Music
  • seventh1: It has some R'n'B sounds, but also sounds like a dark swamp.
  • seventh2: Cute, church bells, coupled with a repetitive annoying melody (quietly)
  • seventh3-2: Nature sounds, suspenseful
  • seventh3: Nature sounds, suspenseful. This one is different from seventh3-2, because, um, maybe it has more nature sounds? I forget.
  • seventh4: Eerie, sounds like an abduction is about to happen.
  • seventh5: This one gives off a feeling of fall leaves dancing in the wind but you're in an industrial district, maybe.
  • seventh6: Uses some of the same sounds as seventh5, but this one is the same feeling as before, but maybe you're taking a shower after walking in a fall-esque industrial district.
  • seventh7: Water splashes, clock striking sound, repetitive and maddening.
