clerence

The first and only flash schlo game released on 08.05.2019 made with Macromedia. This project is unique compared to other visual novels I've made, as it does not have any characters portraits, only sprites and event pictures in the background. There is a YouTube video of a runthrough of this program linked below, as flash is now obsolete.

Description of the game from itch.io: A flash program covering what follows trauma and the beginning to come to terms with one’s true nature.
A previous bloody incident is thought back on while the slight chaos of present day slowly unfolds in front of Slate Clerence, a “schlo” born into a privileged family. A rather subtle look at attempts of self modification, forgiveness and recovery.
Project may technically serve as a prequel to “what is schlo?”, as this project involves characters and events referenced in that game; though it could very well stand as its own independent work.
Potential triggers: mutual rejection of incestual values, mention of violence, blood

Commentary

I consider this to be one of my better works, though it was a very early work of mine. It started as a script for a short film that I then started drawing pictures for and wanted to turn into some sort of interactive experience. I've had a rocky relationship with Ren'Py because I don't really care for the sort of products you can create with it, but it's still good to use. I used Macromedia for this one and followed a really old tutorial for how to use it to code it. I remember Macromedia being very frustrating to use. I couldn't figure out how to type text into it, for example, so I had to style the text how I wanted in microsoft word and take pictures which I then pasted into Macromedia, so that took a ton of time. Also, I wrote the original script in an online program owned by amazon for script writing that they shut down, so I lost the original script for it...This one had a lot of drawbacks and I knew that flash was going to stop being supported when I made it, but it was a fun experience and the end product is good. You should check it out!
